Located at 27 Camp Street Beechworth stands the famous Beechworth
Bakery, which houses so much history. Originally it began as a
one-story building, built around 1857. The second story and balcony
were added in 1900, and it then retailed as a shoe shop. 1974 was
the year Tom O’Toole purchased the building for the first time. He
named it the Ideal Café and Milk Bar, and built his business
rapidly. Three years later he sold the building and moved to Western
Australia where he was branded a leading country baker, only to
return again in 1984 to repurchase it. Alongside the bakery was a
drapers building that Tom also bought, and new developments began
almost immediately.
Today stands a magnificent bakery, with the most delicious and
mouth-watering cakes, pastries, breads and pies one could imagine.
From Beestings, Chocolate Éclairs, Snickerdoodles, and Vanilla
Slice, to Steak pies, Bushman pastries, Country Chicken pies,
sandwiches, coffees and more.
This
impressive bakery has also over the years won many awards, including
Victorian Small Business Tourism Destination.
